Its been 48 hours now since we left the Mexican coast, have done 357nm, with about 2350nm to go! We had a bit of a bumpy first day with winds around 20knots and a fairly big swell. Bit of excitement, with one of the diesel barrels breaking free on the back deck, but luckily nothing damaged. We also had the autopilot loose its heading data - which gave John a bit of a scare on his night watch, as the autopilot stops working, and this boat is very difficult to hand steer. However we reset the system and all is well again.
The weather has calmed down a bit and the temperatures are up - including the sea temp up from about 15deg to 22deg. We sailed past a seamount /
small rock outcrop yesterday and all lines were out.. but no fish! However, a number of baby squid jumped on to our deck in the rough weather - a very
tasty lunch indeed.
You may notice our track is headed a bit more south than a direct line - this is to avoid the higher winds and waves around the North Atlantic high pressure. We will turn in another day or so, on to a direct track to Nuka Hiva .
