We sailed up the Long Island Sound with Tom towards the Connecticut
River, enjoying the beautiful weather. We had about 60nm to go and enjoyed
the extra speed from our large spinnaker. From The Sound, we headed up the
river and had a few nervous moments going under a bridge that was listed on our
charts as 78ft high .. we are somewhere over 70ft with our antenna!. Mike inched
us through, with no problem. Six kilometres up the river to the small town
of Essex. Here we took a mooring ball - which cost $50 per night - which seemed
excessive for a club that did not have a restaurant or even a laundry! Oh for
the lovely city docks in Fort Lauderdale - where for half that price we lived
like kings in the city.
This area of the USA is called New England, and you can see why. The
British influence is evident in the layout of the towns and the architecture -
very quaint. We even went to a pub that had Chantey singers - you know the
kind ...".... all for the beer and tobacco..."

manicured hedges to match!
