Block Island is a small island located about 20km south of
the Rhode Island coast (R.I. being a state not an island at all!) Due
to the climate, Block Island is a very busy holiday destination
for 4 months of the year in the summer and as soon as it cools down, is
inhabited only by the approx 800 permanent residents.
It is a very unique shape, where the centre of the
island is a huge lagoon - or salt pond as it is known. This creates an perfect
anchorage for hundreds of boats. The over-crowded dinghy dock, shows just
how many boats there are here today!
We took a walk from the New Harbor (Salt Pond) to
the Old Harbour and the main town, which is very quaint. There are
hundreds of bicycles and moped to rent , small shops, ferries coming in
from Long Island and Rhode Island, people on the beaches and a real holiday
atmosphere.
We stopped off at a the famous bar called The Oar for a
cold beer on the way back - this bar houses an enormous collection of
oars (not bridesmaids!) left behind by visitors over the years.
Tomorrow we will head up to Newport.
