Harbor, Staten Island
At 6.30 this evening we finally put down our anchor
for a well earned rest. We left Norfolk on Friday at noon, sailed overnight to
Ocean City, where we had a quick sleep and then at 5am this morning
continued north towards New York.
We have had very little wind for the last few days,
and we were very thankful for those 2 x 100HP Yanmar Diesels. The total
trip was about 300nm.
We are anchored in a large calm bay on the east
side of Staten island, one of the boroughs of New York City. There is a marina
and a yacht club on the edge of this bay, but we are happily on anchor. As we
came around Sandy Point from the south and into the New York Bay, which is
HUGE, we could see the skyline of Manhattan in the distance.
Tomorrow we are heading up to "The Big Apple" - can't wait!
This picture is of a small lighthouse
in the New York Bay, close to Great Kill Harbor. If you look carefully in the
background you can see the bridge that runs over The Narrows, the 'entrance' to
New York City .. and a little bit of the Manhattan
