Kowharewa Bay, Tutukaka Harbour
35:36.99S 174:32.09E We had a short sail down the coast to Tutukaka Harbour and enjoyed sunny weather for our short 2 night stop. Not having ventured ashore for the previous two days, we were keen to stretch our legs, so we dinghied ashore and into the marina and met friends Alison and Geoff (sv Saraoni) who were now back in their home berth and it was good to catch up with them over a pizza later that evening at the local pizzeria. The next day, armed with a picnic, we set off on the hike to the lighthouse overlooking the harbour. The tide was timed perfectly, as we needed to cross over to Kukutawhao Island at mid to low water. Fortunately the ground had dried out sufficiently after the recent heavy rain and conditions were excellent. Great spot for a picnic: The entrance to Tutukaka Harbour and the steps down to the causeway to Kukutawhao Island: View of the anchorage (Macushla second from the right): |
