Airlie Beach

Very touristy town, with a public lagoon.  Again, complete with fake beach.

Unfortunately most of the town is dug up – just like Cardwell.  Large marina here.

On the other side of the headland to Airlie Beach is Shute Harbour.  Lots of mooring buoys here but you can anchor and hope you don’t pick up any ground tackle.  The big catamarans leave here for Whitsunday Island – so called by Captain Cook because he was here 50 days after Easter on Whit Sunday – so there you go.

Couple of lovely old style Queenslander Houses.

This is Wilson Beach.  Paul and I sat, yes just sat, for half an hour here.  No people, well a few.  Lovely laid out picnic area.

This is a fixed stinger net on the beach directly in front of us.

Finally more sugar cane.  As the sun gets lower in the sky it really lights up the cane flowers.  Another cane train in the foreground.

Here you can see just how far these fields extend.  Paul was wondering if they worked out the price of the cane similar to sugar beet in Norfolk.  That is, the factory works out a yield price per field or acreage.  Sometimes you win sometimes you lose.

Ripe sugar cane and a lot of cloud.
