The final reason we came here was because we were told about the roast beef they did on a Saturday night in Kate’s camp kitchen.  Here’s Kate giving a little family history.  She is the daughter of the original owners and she, and her husband and three young sons, run the place now.  If you read the advertising for Gemtree you would think it had been in the family for a long time, as it speaks of several generations.  However, we met a lady in Alice Springs who knew the owners who had sold the caravan park to Kate’s parents in 2005 or 2003, I forget which.  Anyway, it was Kate who, with the help of three strapping students – her words – dug out the hollow and built the camp kitchen.

The old gentleman standing looking at the pots was the cook – who was also the gem cutter.

The camp kitchen.  The barrel on the left is a beer keg converted to a roaster.  The pots are all sitting on charcoal which sits on a concrete base.
