Picton to Wellington
It took about 40 minutes to sail down Queen Charlotte Sound, through the Troy Channel and out into Cook Strait. This was soon after we left. DoC is gradually eradicating pine trees on land that it owns, or manages. Before the DoC a group of worried NZ’ers started their own eradication programme. At first they bored holes into the trees and poured in poison. Too slow and laborious. Then they took to the air and shot the trees with poisoned bullets! Still slow and a bit hit and miss. Now they spray. These white ghosts are poisoned pine trees. Ploughed through a yacht race – just like being on the Solent. Surprised Paul didn’t yell Starboard. These are just a few shots of the cloud rolling down the mountains and into the valleys. 180 somewhere down the sound. Through the dog leg into Troy Channel from Charlotte Sound. The Interislander ferry just in front of us. Sun starting to set. Great shot from yours truly. Cloud obscured moon and lights of Wellington. Think these are the lights of Hutt Valley where we stayed the night – some 14km away from the ferry terminal. |
