Lakes Entrance

Paul can pronounce where we are at the moment.  Lakes Entrance is located on the Cunningham Arm of the Gippsland Lakes.  This is the largest lake system in Australia.  Five major rivers flow into this lake system and there are three main lakes that interconnect (Lakes King, Victoria and Wellington). The Lakes are actually shallow lagoons.  They are separated from the ocean by a narrow strip of sand dunes which is known as ninety mile beach.  Lakes Entrance is at far eastern end of the beach.  Views of the eastern entrance to the lagoon system, ninety mile beach is in the background, Cunningham Arm is on the LHS furthest waterway.

The entrance is manmade and has to be constantly dredged.  There was a natural entrance further to the north but that no longer exists.  Apparently it took ages to open because as soon as they dug a bit out it would sand-up again.  A big storm provided the final break through.  The dredger from afar, the line floating behind the boat holds the pumping pipeline off the seabed.
