Final stop before very late lunch Farewell Spit lookout, just ouside Puponga – great name.  You can just about make out the spit going from left to right in the background.  When the tide is in it looks like the beak of a kiwi.  The whole area down the coast from the spit is called golden bay. Loads of waders come here to feed.  There is no public access beyond 4km.  After that you have to catch a tour bus, which can only go down the seaward side of the spit, down as far as the lighthouse.    The main wader territory is the bluey green bit on the inward side of the beak.

Paul took these shots, you can just make out the spit in the distance.

The look-out was on Puponga Farm Park – the only working farm on DoC land.  They need the sheep to maintain the grass.  The lambs are getting really big now.  One day we will be passing the fields and they will all be gone….

Looking back towards Puponga and along the beach at Puponga.
