As I said, the temperature was 42C when we got back to the
car. I was seriously hot and bothered – after this trip I’m going to
Norway.
The Star Hotel used to be a secret drinking place. It was
somehow de-licenced in the 1890s. The workers on the wharf were a bit annoyed
about this and continued to drink illegally in The Shades – the cellar. It was
then that an underground escape tunnel was built so the secret drinkers could
escape the police.
Stephen in the underground tunnel.
You were supposed to pull/push this handle back and forth fast
enough to turn the light on. The only thing I was interested in was in cooling
my feet down.
The bridge hotel had an historic upstairs gallery with rooms
done out or nursemaids, rich and poor folk. luckily we never got any pictures of
that. |
