Sintra
We also went to Sintra by bus, which we thought was much nicer than Lisbon. Smaller and everything easily accessible.
In the mountains surrounded by castles on the mountain tops. Spectacular views to the plains below.
We visited the National Palace. Some furniture but the tiles on the wall, the doorways and the painted ceilings (swans, magpies) were spectacular. Apparently royalty used to stay to hunt and escape the Lisbon summer heat (and plague outbreaks).
The kitchen area was very modern, must put this new kitchen idea in the house.
Although I think we might have a problem with the TWO BIG WHITE Chimneys which are needed for it to work.
We also went to Quinta da Regaleira. House was better on the outside than on the inside – lots of turrets and mishmash of castle towers. The gardens were what I wanted to see though. Built up the side of a mountain, with windy path and then shortcuts between terraces down through spiral staircases inside towers. Also underground walkways.
Evening before our departure lovely firework display to celebrate the beginning of the Festos do Mar. |
