Iluka and Cape Byron
Position 29 22.0 S 153 22.25E Travelled back to the coast to Iluka (NSW), which is on the north side of the Clarence River. Nice site but not a lot to the town. The bowls club had a Chinese Restaurant which was the only restaurant in town. There are lots of sports and social clubs in Australia, usually with a bar and restaurant attached. Generally they are open to public, you have to sign in and get a temporary pass slip. Drove up the coast to Cape Byron. One of the prettiest spots along this coastline is Byron Bay a very touristy, bit hippy, but modern holiday town. There is a fantastic walk you can do around a headland (Cape Byron), up to a lighthouse and back down again. We didn’t know that at the time and by time we arrived too late to do it all. We did walk up and around lighthouse though. The lighthouse was built in 1901and sits on top of Cape Byron. The headland was named by Captain Cook himself in 1770, and is part of an ancient volcano. View of coastline, looking south, you can see the breakers, what you can’t really see is the surfers in the bottom LH corner. When we came back later in the day there was a big pod of dolphins, 20 or 30 so mingling with the surfers, apparently they quite often do that. How do I know this, group of Dolphin Watch volunteers of course. All girls, those boys like lions and sharks! Paul wave watching and with lighthouse in the background. Around the corner…… To ……(only got three more to go). Looking to the North. Rhu tree inspecting |
