Pohara to Abel Tasman National Park 2
Paul hassled these poor variable oystercatchers. Originally fast asleep they were not by the time he had finished chasing them. Aparently they mate for life and occupy the saem half a mile of beach whlst a pair. The beach was strewn with what originally looked like pieces of toilet paper. But they were all the saem length. As the tide went out these transparent blobs were left behind. I think they are salps .. slightly dried out in the RH picture. They are free floating in the ocen and often occur in chains. Some of these appeared to be pulsing. Just read that salps can have a parasitic amphipod living within them so not sure if the salp or a parasite. View of the beach at Totaranui. Everywhere you go in NZ there are landslides, caused by the rain, the overgrown vegetation or earthquakes. Part of the coastal track was closed because of a huge landslide. Here’s Pauls picture of a mini one and me wondering what is keeping him. Yes those tree ferns are really that big. |
