Decided to visit Melbourne but took ages to get there.  Drove for about an hour to Seymour and then about hour and a half on the train to Melbourne.  Caught the tourist tram, which is free, around the CBD (Central Business District) – they all talk about CBD.  Guess it must be one of the oldest parts of the city because there were very small lanes between some of the buildings.  These contained quirky shops – I never did go back for my new rucksack – and pavement cafes/restaurants.

We are discovering that all the cities, in fact everywhere, have big air conditioned shopping malls.  In Melbourne there are some lovely ones in the Royal Arcade and the old post office.  Think this is the old post office – but not sure. You can see the big Victorian arches at the bottom.

The old intact buildings are Victorian so lots of high ceilings.  Here’s  sample:

Passed this cake shop (salivate) in one of the arcades in Melbourne. People were queuing outside to get in.

Trams run straight through the middle of Melbourne, so you have to dodge when crossing the road.

Melbourne also has the move over to the left hand lane to turn right rule, which lots of people think is odd, but makes sense when you have trams going down the middle of the road.

One of the big department stores in Australia – Myers (just like John Lewis) – is famous for it’s Christmas window.  Again big queues waiting to see this.

Merry Christmas from Melbourne:
