Kakadu - Jabiru and a couple of birds
Position 12 39.9S 132 50.21E Well the most exciting thing that happened here other than doing the laundry and shopping was spotting a couple of different birds. These are red-tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii). The male and the female are shown here. The male is all black bird in the background. You can see his massive helmet like crest folded down. When erect it overhangs far forward of the massive grey bill. The females (and juveniles) are spotted yellow. The females have a yellow tail fan and the males a red. Unfortunately don’t see it unless tail feathers are fanned out. The females crest is folded down here. This bird Paul spotted this trio of birds whilst we were on the hunt for an empty washing line. Finally identified them as bush stone curlew (Burhinus grallarius). Really tall with long legs A large baleful yellow eye and a dark stripe, under the eye down its neck. |
