Nelson's Dockyard Antigua
This is a very historic place and it has been both a real
pleasure and privilege to be here over this Christmas period.
Nelson was stationed at the dockyard in 1784. The British
navy used it originally as a hurricane hole to protect their vessels in the very
strong winds generated by these storms. It eventually became the British Navies
base for the Caribbean.
The dockyard was used by both Nelson and other navy ships
to have both repairs done and to careen the ships. this involved pull them over
by the masts to expose the ship hull bottom so they could be cleaned and re
tarred.
When the navy left it fell into disrepair but has now been
restored and now is in the care of the National Parks Authority.
The dockyard is now both a museum and an operating marina.
I am not sure if the visitor think all the yachts are part of the
display!!
