Undara - Lava tubes 1
First stop on our extended volcanic trip was to a lookout. You can see volcanoes in the background. Paul ignoring the height This is the Northern Queensland Bottle tree. This one had grooves in which had been cut in the trunk. Evidence of aboriginals climbing trees using vines. The seed pod. Evidence of a collapsed lava tube roof. The rocks are full of gas pockets. Bad news if you put them on a fire. Down into the first lava tube. Into the first tunnel. These are about 18 m tall and wide. The orange is iron oxide. Beautiful patterns on the ceiling Some of the dead things found in the tunnels.. kangaroo, pig, dingo, wallaby The blackberries on the ceiling are bats. Baby bats all huddled together, with some adults standing as sentinels around the edges. Adults started to get peeved with the lights. The next tunnel was through a tiny gap – well not that tiny, obviously because I managed to get through it, and clamour down a rock fall – although this is the scramble back up. |
