The western end of Viti Levu is very rural – well all of Fiji is - but here
they grow a lot of crops. One of the main ones is sugarcane. There
is a small railway that runs through the fields, along the coast and into
Lautoka where the sugar mills are. According to Gary (Felicity J), farmers
get $57 per tonne – is it worth it? Out of this comes the $1 per tonne or
$3 per tonne rail or road respectively, transportation costs. The train
runs through town,villages and resorts:
I guess you’d think it was cute, until you realised that train goes
24/7.
One of the quickest ways of getting from A to B, and avoiding the hills in
the heat, is to walk along the railway track. Iseta and I on the railway
track back to Vuda Marina.
