Flat rocks site and dinosaurs

About 106 to 115 million years ago this area was about 70 degrees South. 

 

 

This stretch of coastline was once a wide river valley with channels crossing it.  When the rivers flooded animals drowned and got deposited in pools and became fossilised. 

 

 

At low tide the rocks are exposed as a wave cut platforms.  Palaeontologists return every summer to excavate between tides.

 

 

Lots of sediment was deposited above that in which the dinosaurs were preserved.  In places cracks in sediments have resulted in sea caves.

 

 

This was incredible.  From afar it looks like a shadow on the rock from a small overhang.

 

 

But when you got closer to started to writhe…

 

 

Swarm of flies.

 

 

And finally, these beautiful striped limpets..

 

 

And tiny blue snails.
