14th July – 17th July
Rough, but quick, crossing to Fiji, short period waves so we rocked
and rolled like mad. Entered Koro Sea via the Lakeba passage.
Arrived at Savusavu (Vanua Levu) and tied up to mooring buoy at 0700 (local
time) on the 17th July. We were then boarded by Health and Customs
later in the morning. Three other boats arrived with us. Amazing we
did not see a solitary boat all the way from Tonga and then three of us arrived
within 30 minutes of each other.
17th July – 21st July
Unlike most of the other islands in the Pacific Savusavu seems to be a
vibrant community, with all shops, hotels and restaurants still open. Lot of
Indians here – brought over to work in the tea plantations – they seem to own ,
or work, in all the shops. Also a lot of Chinese – apparently buying up all the
bauxite and sea cucumbers (an interesting combination). Great market with
lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Paul has bought cava (of course) in
the hopes of being invited into a village to drink the stuff.
A fete going on at the moment. You would not believe the state of the
Ferris wheel which they have put up. We debated last night which way it would
roll if it came off. Huge queue to get on it as well. We were told if it stayed
up the first night, would probably be OK the second. And it really, really goes
round fast. On the boat now and you can hear the screams of the kids (and
adults) as it goes round – of course they could be the screams as it comes off
as well!

Awesome cake by Ceri, we forgot about the toothpicks holding the layers
together though.
Just for you, Keith.
Fantastic sunset.
