24/9/11 – 26/9/11 Quinta do Lordes to Isla Graciosa, Canaries.  29 13.05N 013 31.79W

Left Madeira at 1015 after refuelling.  Generally motoring during the day and sailing at night.  Spotted whale spout on the 25th, Mark and Helen got a picture of whale –mutter, mutter, mumble.  I saw two turtles which must mean there are quite a few about.  But best of all florescence is alive and doing well, just like we used to see on night crossings in English Channel 20 years ago.  Lots of little plankton and some big ones as well, jellyfish I assume - exploding light from central point just like a firework.  Found a squid on the deck on arrival in Isla Graciosa.  Had to reef in last part of sail so that we arrived in daylight.  Anchored at Playa Francesca at about 1000.  Twelve other boats here.  You are supposed to get a permit to stay here as the whole island is a nature reserve.  We applied for one, but have had no reply but are here anyway.  Marita III arrived about 2pm - when Paul and I were swimming.  Yes Jenny we have been in the water, 25.6C – and it’s cold.  Found the trip very tiring, could not sleep either nights at sea so very tired.  Cannot believe we have actually sailed to the Canaries.
