Our second anchorage in the Marquesas - Atuona on Hiva Oa,
about 50 miles to the north and slightly west of Fatu
Hiva.
The mountains overlooking the town and
anchorage.
The anchorage, and one of the rare occasions when
there was no cloud on the mountains.
The anchorage generally had an onshore wind, so it
was a lee shore with sterns to the beach at the
head
of the bay. Not
ideal, but unlike Fatu Hiva, this
bay was very shallow - we were anchored in less than 20ft
so were able
to put out sufficient chain to
feel secure that we would not drag ashore.
The houses of the village nestled in the valley
between the mountains.
Hiva Oa natives of old
.....
....... and the natives of
today!
