Les Saintes are a lovely group of small islands approximately
10 miles south of Guadeloupe and 18 miles north of Dominica. The
passage from Deshaies was disappointing, but as expected - there was
absolutely no wind down the west coast and we had to motor all the way,
arriving off the only town, Bourg des Saintes. The water in the anchorage,
which was quite crowded, is deep and we had to anchor in 50ft of water,
close to 2 uncharted yellow buoys. We later found that they marked a sunken
ferry boat and we decided to move just in case our anchor chain got too close
and tangled with the wreck. But not before visiting the town. We liked Les
Saintes 13 years ago and were not disappointed this time. The islands are full
of French charm and the streets are very narrow and quaint. The houses
are painted in a lovely variety of pastel blues, greens, reds and yellows -
Caribbean gingerbread, real picture postcard stuff!
