Motored back up the long and winding channel inside the reef (about 7 miles and taken slowly!) from the southern anchorage to the main village of Fare. We wanted to do a bit more restocking as we heard that the shop there is a lot better than the ones on Raiatea, our next destination about 25 miles to the west. On the approach the anchorage at Fare a pod of dolphins escorted us in, bow riding and swimming around the boat. We've seen very few dolphins in the Pacific so this was a lovely surprise, captured on the camcorder. The anchorage is a delight, 30 feet or so deep on sand on the edge of the main pass through the reef and overlooking the turquoise waters of the lagoon. And to make it even more special, the dolphins came back the next morning, feeding in the pass. It's a lovely spot to just sit and watch the world go by - shame we can't stay longer.
