The only village on Isabela is Puerto Villamil. It's a very
quiet place with a few streets. The pavements are built up with flag stones of a
sort, but the roads are just compressed sand. When they get too rutted a
JCB-like contraption goes along with a leveling device on it and bingo, they
have a new road again. The lampposts were also quite interesting. There is a
hotel and a few of what we would call guest houses, but nothing big and it's all
low key, and not at all expensive. There were 2 or 3 grocery stores, which
everyone rushes to after the supply ship comes in.
One of the streets at rush hour!
All the lampposts are like this one. The hotel is
behind.
Although you may not believe it looking at these
pictures, people do actually live here and they
do have a few cars and
pick-ups.
The long and dusty road back to the small
harbour and anchorage. It's a 15-20 minute walk
and
not something to rush in the heat of the day on
the Equator.
