Another short passage of 5 miles along the coast to the west. This is another spectacular anchorage with sheer cliffs rising to a 1,600 feet mountain all along the west side. The bay cannot be seen from the sea as the entrance points overlap, so once inside you cannot see the sea, but are surrounded on all sides by hills and mountains. We visited the waterfall at the head of the valley yesterday. It's about a 5 mile hike up the valley and one of the most beautiful hikes in the Marquesas. The waterfall is over 2,000ft high and they say it's the 3rd highest in the world, but it did lack something quite important for a waterfall - water! It is the dry season and so there was just a trickle coming down, but the pool at the bottom gave us a lovely cool swim and the resident eel (a freshwater moray about 8ft long) came to inspect. I don't think we would have gone in had we seen it first!
