After relentless rain all day, the weather started to clear as we drove north from Franz-Joseph, so tempted by stories of Arthur’s Pass, we decided to do a detour and took the Otira Valley road as far as the top of the Pass. It was well worth it, with stunning scenery and a nearly deserted road.

And of course, the Keas, trying to play with the vehicles that stop to admire the view.

The photographs do not really do it justice, but it was getting late, so with Driver 2 at the wheel and Driver 1 deciding on the campsite for the night, we headed back down the Otira road until we reached the Lake Brunner Road. Lake Brunner is a lovely, peaceful stretch of water with a quiet campsite for self contained vehicles maintained by the clearly wealthy local authority. A real gem.

As we arrived so late and it was so beautiful, we tarried for a lakeside walk next morning.
