Left PIcton in sunshine, driving through endless vineyards and famous names such as Bancroft Estates, Selene, Blacks et al. Once on the coast, rain, gales and roadworks where the road is still being repaired after the 2010/2011 earthquakes. Driver 1 enjoyed all the pretty girls waving at us from their “Stop” and “Go” signs, the heavy vehicles moving tons of earth and rubble and the flashing lights and hi-vis coats. Driver 2 enjoyed the seals resting on rocks and boulders on the beach beside the road, the sea and surf and the “slow down” signs that kept Driver 1 under control. We decide not to go whale watching in Kaikoura, but press on. No point in looking for pretty campsites or rest areas with pouring rain and poor vis, so we camped by the side of the road between the sections closed overnight as they are considered too dangerous for driving in the dark.

Next day, we arrived in Christchurch, happily not in the rain, in good time for an explore of the famous city centre area.

The bull in front of the Arts Centre, a huge edifice of glass and steel that pretty well survived the quake.

A lovely sunset over the lake while we enjoyed a drink and supper before a peaceful night.

So tomorrow, on to Banks Peninsular and Arokoa, before heading South again.
