South, visit Yerolimena, around Cape Matapan and back up to sheltered Porto Kayio

Tues 31May Good sailing. Visit attractive Yerolimena, then fast sail down to bottom of Mani and motor up E coast to sheltered inlet Porto Kayio 18nm (S3.25 M2.25) Depart 0745, main and genny fill after an hour as NW f3/4 fills in, we`re going S. High cliffs. Attractive coast. Motor N into cliffed inlet, anchor well in off beach at Yerolimena 1015. Gusts coming down valley, swell from S. Decide to lower Merc and go ashore. Can`t find any bins. Kind tavern owner explains bins well out of village, and takes our gash. Decent minimarket to replenish stores. Good coffee/oj at friendly taverna. Very pleasant place. Season not yet started tho a few tourists visiting by car. Would be nice to stay night and explore more but decide best to move on as uncomfortable swell and more wind forecast. Depart 1215 Head S under just genoa. 5/6knts SSE to Ak Tainaro (Cape Matapan), the bottom of Mani, most southerly point of mainland Greece, and very nearly the most southerly point of mainland Europe (Cape Taifa at the entrance to Gibraltar Strait wins by 14miles). Wind dies as round and motor N to pretty sheltered bay Porto Kayio. Arrive 1515.Anchor well in S of bay so don`t fully catch the gusts, between a couple of Frenchies. First drop too close to steel Frenchie, second drop doesn`t take, third go is spot on 40m chain out in 24ft.Two Germans already in, but further out. Another four arrive. Gusting f5 and veers. Steel Frenchy looks to drag a bit. We look good. Row duck ashore to small plastic pontoon. A few tavernas and campervans ashore. Not much else. Walk to chapel on headland. See how gusts descend on sea to E and froth surface, like sprats jumping, in random directions, sometimes a radiating circle. Don`t want all sails up in that. Beer ashore with classy free snack. Another must come back. |
