Great sail N to Vasiliki to meet Rachel
27 May Super sail NNW across sound to Vasiliki, tucked well in famous windsurfing bay on S of Lefkas, to meet Rachel Depart Frikes 0925 Arrive Vasiliki 1155 High cloud for a while, WNWf4, then more W Unusually some ripples and wind at dawn. Collect ordered bread, breky and brief chat with Irish lads on a big Bav. Carefully dump beer cans and plastics in one recycle bin, cardboard in another, and remaining gash in general bin – only to see bin lorry arrive and empty ALL in together. Greece not really in to recycling! Head out. Keep 2 reefs in from yesterday, but not enough sail as head N up E coast of Ithaki, so shake out reefs. Put them back in as a bit frisky rounding N of Ithaki. Can fetch 15/20degrees above course for Vasiliki bay, so steer higher in case wind heads. It actually frees, and drops a tad, so shake out reefs again and cream across 5+knts, touching 6 as near destination – then wind dies once within Vasiliki bay. Neilson and Sailing Holidys flotillas are exiting bay so shoul be plenty of room to tie up. No wind in bay so drop main without changing course. Lift keel a bit as pilot mentions shoals near inner harbour. None found. Rachel arrives (on pub bike) straight from “work” to wave us in and take bow lines. Big hugs. Brew up. Get bromptons out to visit apartment and Neilson sailing/windsurfing/mountainbiking centre hotel, Rachel’s base for 6 months. Rach very much at home chatting to guests and instructors wearing bright Physio t shirt to advertise her role. No appointments this afternoon till 1730, so time for a quick windsurf. Revisit apartment to collect washing and shower – 3euros not needed today, so have 6euros worth! Hear Jen is back in hospital with recurring buildup of fluid after her op. Hope settles down soon so she and Jamie can join us soon. Also hear Astra has summited on Lateral/Midi, so all downhill now. Last day skip under 60, so celebrate with FB steak n ale, with tasty green beans and everso succulent strawberries for pud. Rach does some physio next door. Three of her friends arrive to help get rid of boat beer, tonic etc! |
