43:00.5N 6:11.8E Monday 13 October To Porquerolls, one of the islands off Hyeres Depart St Tropez 0615 Arrive Porquerolls marina 1400 35nm M6.25 5 S1.5 Cloudy, but mostly dry Windy night. Eases off before dawn. Check forecast. Lets go. Cast off single handed, but motoring 070degrees and slamming into remains of swell soon wakes Jane. Where`s the moon? Must be cloudy. Jane steers whilst hoist main to help punch thro swell. Leaving St T have to head E about 5 miles, then S a bit further, and can then head W. Long way round – the price for a visit to such a famous port. Soon realise too much sail so put in 2 reefs. 0730 round La Moutte, with full genoa 6/7knts heading 180degrees. 0830 gets light from astern, and wind eases coming in from NW so motorsail fetching along N coast of the Iles d`Hyeres, between islands and mainland. Some blue patches above, misty rain showers ahead. 1100 WSW breeze ripples in, but too light and close to sail - can`t quite lay 250degrees to clear N coast of island. Arrive just after heavy shower. Loads of room again. Bows to – very heavy chain on first part of laid stern lines so difficult to lift as deep here. Unusual. Calm and tranquil, just the noise of seagulls. Clears up with blue sky overhead and white fluffy clouds (English summer clouds)over mainland to N. Season has ended so most shops/bars closed. Find some cans of beer, bread and a tasty pastry, but only long life milk. Climb up to Fort Ste Agathe. Apparently we captured it in 1793. Our fleet arrived, invited the Commander aboard, got him drunk, raided and burnt the fort, and sailed off with him still on board. Astra was lifted out in Messolonghi today. Sorry not there |
