16/17 August – good flight back from Bristol, restock with provisions and
cast off by 1400 to head for bays on NE tip of Nisos Kerkira (Corfu)
Depart 1400
Arrive Ormos Agni 1630 7nm
Very hot. Not a breath of wind
16 Aug Put Volvo back in garage (with mattress on roof!), train from
Lympstone to Bristol TM and airport bus. All very smooth and on time. Check in
bag, absolutely no queue – bow roller has to go in hold bag as unusual cargo.
Leon has done a super weld with 10mm bar so no sharp edges that would cut thro
warp. Sit in sun outside terminal – not seen much sun during 3 weeks in UK!
Boarded early, and took off early too, about 1715. V overweight lady had taken
our window seat and refused to move. Perhaps she was stuck in seat and couldn’t
get out. Ignored her all flight! Taxi driver wanted 25euros, but we insisted on
20, being the homeward cost. He got grumpy, so no conversation. Arrive Gouvia
Marina, put bags on board – wedding party at swim pool. Head for bar, even tho
2315.
17 Aug Visit sm for provisions. Pay for hatchcovers/sun awnings made and
delivered by Antonios whilst we were in UK. 14mm floating rope has not arrived
at chandlers – will have to get elsewhere. Hose down D`fly and top up water tank
– tank water v smelly but no time to empty and refill. Fit bowroller. Looks
great. Checkout at Marina Office. Plant Ed’s basil – that left on board well
and truly dead. Marina v full as changeover day. Many palefaces arriving. Cast
off just before 1400, to avoid staying more than the month paid for. Fuel
pontoon blocked by large myacht and others already hovering, so decided not to
top up. Motor NE across bay to coves off mountainous NW tip of Corfu Island,
only a mile or so from Albanian coast. Saw inlets on the way down but did not
have time to explore. Like the first bay, Ormos Agni, so anchor just off swim
area. 3 tavernas, each with own pontoon – other yachts go stern to, but suffer
more from waves caused by wake of many large ferries/cruise liners passing
between Corfu and Albania. Sea temp unbelievably warm – can stay in for ever.
Discover slow progress across bay caused by fouled prop – many curly white
crustations. Dive to scrape off and sand. Hard work as fixed by nature’s
superglue! Many small hire boats coming and going. Small ferries drop off many
for evening meal at tavernas. Posh speedboats arrive for same. All head back at
reasonable hour to leave peace and quiet in this lovely bay.
