27 May - Bridget and Job head back to England (and work!), we venture
on.
Depart Agen 0940
Arrive Moissac 1710 26nm, 8 locks and a hoot to open a bridge in
Moissac!
Sunny spells, but v cold air temp
J-P took me to get two jerry cans of diesel from supermarket (car
thermometer reading 7 degrees!), girls did the farmers market which was
extraordinary, and excellent value. B & J head for airport, so just two of
us to do the locks – but we practiced yesterday so all smooth. Ran aground when
met a large barge coming round blind bend, one of the few as the Lateral is
like the roman roads – miles and miles of straight runs broken with locks to
give a bit more altitude, and lined each side by the magnificent plane trees.
Locks still automatic with the dangly pole. Can keep going thro “lunch hour”
(1230 to 1330). Had to actually wait a few minutes at one lock as two reds – a
boat was in it coming the other way. Hung out all washing and sun dried. Jane
broke out the shorts – warm in sun but too cold for me in the shade under
bridges and clouds! Most impressed with Moissac. Pretty place. Brits run the
Capitainery, and all the boats make a pleasant sight on the canal “high
street”.
