23 Aug – motor and sail all of 4 miles back to Gaios to be sure of Ang
getting her fast ferry to Corfu town 1000 tomorrow
4nm
Ang swims ashore first thing as Taverna opens for her daily caffeine (D`fly
just does tea so coffee drinkers suffer). Shorten anchor chain as the
tripper/tourist boats arrive. Don’t really want to head back to Gaios as so
pleasant here, but ought to. Nice sail north, so yet more helming practice for
Ang. Drop kedge and go bows to again (only third time we have done this! All a
bit hectic at the back steering, adjusting revs fwd/astern, launching kedge in
right spot and letting out chain/warp whilst glamour up fwd looks for friendly
yachtie already moored up to take bow lines.)Once moored up bowsprit is great,
and built in ladder used as the quays tend to be V low. All ashore for stroll –
its lovely, and quite trendy – Salcombe like. Loads of Italians about. Back to
boat to find new neighbour had to get in just as rudder jammed at full lock.
Engineer from another flotilla (same company) heard VHF call for assistance so
called in to mend – but when they launched kedge they forgot it wasn’t tied on
at bitter end – only realised when it had all gone over. They spend some time
with borrowed grapnel, but nothing found. Murky water about 30ft deep, so not
able to recover with snorkel either. Ang ashore early evening to catch up on
emails. Set up used bottles on bow lines as talk of 4 legged visitors at night.
Skip and Jane follow for beers and lovely meal out. Ang spends final night out
in cockpit under stars (as all previous nights) so no need to wash berth
sheets!
