42:02.1N 11:52.5E Sunday 5 October Don`t make ruins! Prop fouled as exit berth. Leave coastal sprawl behind, anchor off Santa Marinella for night Depart Porta di Roma 1230 Arrive Santa Marinella 1815, 28nm M3.5 S2.25 Another really sunny day, but chilly afternoon Head off for Roman ruins, but both suffering from temperature. Find rail station, but no ticket office – even tho just a couple of stops seems need to buy expensive day ticket from mc. Could get bus, but takes some time to get there. As both not feeling great decide do sm instead and head back to D`fly n move on. Shame as pictures in pilot look stunning and very favourable Captain`s Mate reports too. Reverse out 1230. Much black smoke from exhaust. Even more black smoke in fwd. Prop fouled. Creep out and as head for vacant alongside berth on pontoon engine stalls. Jane leaps ashore and pulls us in. Get snorkel and mask – don`t fancy the dive as horrible marina water (no tides to flush out) and still feeling groggy. Climb down stern ladder. With D`fly can hold ladder in one hand and reach prop with other. Thro murk see large industrial black plastic bag now shredded and wrapped around prop. Free in three dives with little cutting. Call at fuel berth (14ltrs 35.50euros), return fob, collect deposit – nearly pays for diesel. Dead calm outside. Hundreds of boats out . Many fishing over buoyed areas. Not sure what the seabed obstruction is. 1430 seabreeze arrives – can`t quite lay course on port, but making 4/5knts, and peaceful. Leave coastal sprawl behind. Replaced by low rolling meadows and wooded hilltops. Sun bright but low by 1600, loses its power so dig out fleece top and bottoms. 1730 drop main and motor last 2nm dead into wind. Anchor in 12ft just 60m off E breakwater. Fishermen casting out. Hope don`t hook anchor chain, or guardwires. Calm quiet night, just occasional train passing on coastal mainline. |
