On Thursday evening we began to pick up wind from a passing front and put two reefs in the mainsail before the night watches. It was fast sailing through the night and the third reef went in at midnight. We had two periods of torrential rain as the front passed over us on Friday morning then the wind dropped below 10 knots and we have been motoring since. We are now north of 30 degrees south and the warmth of the sun has brought out Sarah’s shorts!

We left Opua just ahead of our friend Bernd, on Rebell, and have been able to see him on AIS quite often as we make similar progress north. We’ve even managed a couple of chats when we’ve been within radio distance. Last night we had another boat that left at the same time as us on our screen, and we have been followed by a couple of Mollymawks. It’s nice to have company.
