Porto Santo

Porto Santo is high on the list of our favourite places from those we have visited.  It would be good to stay a bit longer, but the wind is turning Southerly from later tomorrow and picking up over the weekend, so we are going to move on to Madeira.

The main (only town) of the island is small and very well maintained.  Despite the dryness of the place there are gardens everywhere, both public and private, which give it a lush, green feeling.  In general what traffic there is doesn’t move fast, which makes it very leisurely.

The marina is just over the wall from the main beach and the water is clear and warm.  Even Phil stayed in for more than a few minutes and was smiling!

Today we got a taxi out to the North East corner of the island and followed a walking trail out to Pico Branco and Terra Cha. The views were amazing, and when we stopped at the viewpoint at the end and sat down we found ourselves surrounded by lizards that obviously knew people meant food.  They were all over us and our rucksacks and when we put our banana skins down they started eating them! Rather than get a taxi back we followed the road for a few kilometres before turning off onto a side road where we found a café for a coffee and icecream and then completed our walk back to the marina around the coast, along a track above the sea.
