Trish and I have hired a campervan to journey south from Darwin and visit first the Kakadu national park and then further south to Katherine to explore the Nitmiluk NP. After EabyJeeby in NZ Trish has named this one  Sherrrrrrdunk after the sound the sliding door makes.
As with New Zealand the campervan option gives you far more freedom but many Ozzies and foreign tourists rent 4WD Toyota Landcruisers converted to give basic tented accomodation but giving them the ability to take the heavily rutted dirt roads that cut through this huge area.
Kakadu is a double listed world heritage area acclaimed for both Cultural and Environmental importance and is noted for its five different environments one of which, the huge wetland area swamps vast areas of the park in the wet season and is home to 1,000's of crocodiles and millions of birds.
