Williwaws

The 5 Bays area provides a range of out of the way anchorages with few signs of civilisation apart from a few small fishing hamlets. The heavily wooded Santa Marta mountains roll back towards the northern tip of the Andes and this combination creates some interesting wind conditions with a constant succession of Williwaws (very strong gusts of wind).

You can hear these approach sounding like an express train and they whip up the surface of the sea sending spray over the boat and causing the boat to veer around its anchor chain until they have passed when all becomes peaceful again.2009_12060014.JPG
