We continue to make the most of our time here in
the Fakarava Atoll in the north central Tuamotus.
We had been told that of all the atolls this was
the one to come to and spend quality time.
A friend who had been with us in the San Blas
believed that he had found his dream come true on one of the many tiny islets
but I suspect that he might change his mind if he came here. He could have his
own little Motu complete with coconut trees but still wander along the reef to
visit friends when he gets lonely.
The small village of Rotoava has a really nice
feel to it, warm generous and friendly people, a grocery store, a bakery and
locally grown fruit and vegetables. There are one or two hotels and pensions and
a number of dive companies that take divers out to the reefs and for the more
adventurous to the north and south passes.
The snorkelling is the best yet and Trish broke her
photo record yesterday with 420 shots taken in one session, she then spends
hours identifying and cataloguing the fish and coral.

different fish in this shot, including
a Steephead Parrotfish complete with his own
Cleaner Wrasse, a Bluestripe Snapper
and Squirrel Fish

 Trish captured a great sequence of this
Slingjaw Wrasse that when feeding
uses its extendable jaw structure to a thrid the
length of its body to form a tube
  It looks as though it is eating a plastic
bag!
