Stormy weather

It's easy to forget here in the tropical south pacific that it is winter
here in the southern hemisphere.
The remnants of a huge southern ocean storm that has disrupted weather
systems so badly continues to have an effect on the weather here in the
Tuamotus. Our decision to leave Fakarava early and head for a more sheltered
anchorage in Anse Amyot on Toau atoll has certainly been vindicated with the
atolls to the south of us feeling the effects of strong winds and big seas
washing into the lagoons. The forecasts have been surprisingly accurate and
indicated that the worst of the weather would be felt here in the central
Tuamotus at the tail end of the storm's track across the South Pacific.
Winds overnight built to 30 knots and will continue throughout the day. From
our unique position here on the outside of the lagoon we can clearly see
large waves and swell created inside the small, shallow lagoon and
conditions would have been far worse in the large open lagoon in Fakarava.
Ergo....when sailing/cruising never be in the wrong place at the wrong
time....... Jimmy Cornell.
