A 3.30am start gave us the time needed to cover the 102nm to Possession
Island on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula.
Lighter winds than the previous few days restricted us to a 7kt average but
by taking the short cut through the Albany Passage and around the tip of
Cape York we were able to reach the anchorage with time to spare before
dark.
We now have clear water to the west of us along our route to Cape Wessels,
some 335nm away. To the north are the main islands of the Torres Straits,
Thursday Island, the administrative centre for the Torres Straits Islanders,
Horn and Prince of Wales Island. The straits are littered with small
islands, reefs and seamounts and must have been a nightmare for the early
navigators, but thankfully we now have accurate charts and well lit channels
to provide safe passage through this area.
