The Journey or the Landfall?

Many cruisers like the time at sea, away from external pressures, modern
communication systems and if truth be told....other people.
For us the passages are simply a way of getting to places that we could
never see any other way and also meeting a wide variety of interesting
people, all with stories to tell.
There are memorable highlights to many of the passages, a view of the stars
that put everything into perspective, rushing through a dark night with the
sea alight with phosphorescence "bombs" and many, many more. But there is
also the downside to passage making, long sleepless nights when the boat is
corkscrewing down big waves in confused seas, being tossed about the galley
when trying to make a meal or generally feeling listless and even bored at
times.
But there is usually at least one stand-out moment in all trips, sailing by
Giant Manta Rays at the start of the leg from the Galapagos to the
Marquesas, being surrounded by 100's of dolphins playing alongside the boat
or like today at the very end of the overnight passage from Atutaki,
rounding the SW corner of the reef at Palmerston and seeing young Humpback
Whales having a tail slapping competition and churning up the sea around
them. Memorable!
