We have now left Grenada and headed almost due west to the small island of Blanquilla, located 70 nm off the north coast of Venezuela. The island is deserted apart from a coastguard station and some fishermen but located almost half way to Los Roques it is a convenient stepping stone that breaks the journey into two relatively short overnight passages.

After a good start with moderate winds giving us 7.5 knots downwind, the wind then fell away to nothing and we were left to motor the rest of the way in almost flat seas. Apart from a few birds and flying fish we encountered schools of spotted dolphins on a number of occasions.

After a few unsuccessful tries at fishing, we caught a nice fat tuna for supper and less than 30 minutes after catching it sat down to large fresh tuna steaks, green Papaya in cheese sauce and breadfruit salad, all prepared by Yann. The remainder of the tuna went into the freezer to be used for a fish pie at some future date.

We decided to check in with the local coastguard rather than risk a visit to the boat and then motored round to a bay on the west coast to find another 3 boats already anchored. After catching up on some sleep we snorkelled around the underwater rocks and reefs that were teeming with fish.
