Day 3
22:52.5N 18:26.5W After a frustrating day2 the last 24 hours have been far
more successful than the previous 24. The light north easterlies have continued to keep the
pace down and we have had to sail much further to the south than we would have
liked. This will have put us far down the fleet but hopefully we will pick up
the better winds that are forecasted closer to the African coast. Yesterday was a beautiful day with great downwind sailing
in bright sunshine with lunch taken in the cockpit. In mid afternoon we had gybed to the west but with a beam
sea the boats motion in the light winds was too rolly so we prepared to gybe
back to the south before dark. As we were getting ready one of the two rods
started to shed line. A Fish! We must have sailed through a shoal of yellow fin
tuna and both rods had a decent sized fish on the hook. This delayed our gybe as we prepared one of the fish for
dinner and threw the other back to swim on. After the torture of the previous night caused by
flogging sails and little wind we decided to break our own self imposed rule of
taking in the big cruising chute before dark. Our reasoning being that with
only light winds forecast and no squalls we could safely leave the sail up all
night. In the event this proved to be the right call with winds
ranging from 3 to 16kts we were able to keep up a steady pace with a high of
nearly 10 kts of boat speed and a steady boat enabling all crew to get some
settled sleep. All are well and enjoying the experience. The pick of yesterdays music:-The Black Keys, George
