After an evening of strong near gale force winds we left Cabo de la Vela
just after midnight for the 120nm passage to 5 Bays just to the north of
Santa Marta. Some people have likened these bays to the Norwegian Fjords and
although they are impressive and the scenery dramatic, Norwegian Fjords they
are not.
As we approached the coast the snow capped mountains of the northern Andes
came into view rising just inland to over 4,500m. It was incredible to think
that just a week ago I was climbing this huge mountain chain 700 miles to
the south in Ecuador.
If the weather looks Ok we will stay over another day here to explore and
catch up on some sleep before the final 120nm leg down to Cartagena.
