Rangiroa

With the strong winds forecasted to ease to be followed by a 5 to 7 day
period of calm we decided to leave Toau with the last of the breeze and head
overnight straight for Rangiroa where the diving and snorkelling are said to
be amongst the best in the world. The 100nm downwind passage was fitful with
the wind below 10 knots for much of the trip. The passes continue to be
scary and exciting in equal measures with the Passe Tiputa approached at
what was supposed to be slack water only to find huge rips and whirls
outside the pass and a 5 knot outgoing current in the centre of the main
channel. More clenched buttocks! I have three source of tidal data and ALL
are wrong. I now believe only local knowledge will be of any value although
when I asked a guy in Manihi he told me to watch the water and look at my
watch.....Time for a sleep!
