Over the last 5 days the wind and currents has pushed us much further south
than we wanted to go and we knew that at some point our rapid passage times
would come to an end and we would have to pay the price. After another great
days sailing yesterday when we flew the big chute to starboard and poled out
the yankee to port the night brought light and variable winds, little
progress and lots of rocking and rolling and flogging sails. Torture!
This morning we have tried various sail combinations, wind angle strategies
and anything else we could think of to gain ground but to no effect. We have
resorted to sailing under Yankee alone, slowly but at least in the direction
we want to go. We are further handicapped by having blown our main cruising
chute halyard and can now only fly the chute to starboard (not the side we
want it on). Yesterday we were looking at a 16 and even possibly a 15 day
passage but with the change of fortunes we now look more like 17 or even 18
days.
Still after 12 days of seeing little or no sea life a large school of
dolphins are playing around the boat as I write this e mail.
All are well if a little tired and frustrated.
