Heading west

Having sailed over 1,350nm since we left Brisbane 3 weeks ago we have
covered over half of the east coast of Australia.
Now that we have rounded the most northerly point of Cape York and transited
the Torres Straits, we will now head due west to sail over half of
Australia's northern coastline.
Much of this area is uninhabited or at best very sparsely populated and now
controlled by the indigenous Aboriginals who are returning to their old ways
in an attempt to hold on to their ancient cultures, believed to be at least
50,000 years old in this area. Permission is required to land on much of
this northern coastline and there is little in the way provisions or even
fresh water to be had.
We must also be aware of the many dangerous creatures to be found in this
part of Australia, not least of which are the regularly fatal Box Jellyfish
sting, the estuarine and saltwater crocodile bites or the venom of 6 of the
world's top 10 most venomous snakes.
Trish and I are unlikely to be taking a quick dip or a walk in the bush over
the next few weeks!
